Currently, there are no affordable, sustainable, simple and objective tests that can make microbes visible in the food industry.
This UK Food Safety Research Network project is developing new products for testing food production environments for bacterial contamination.
The company FreshCheck are developing an affordable hygiene testing system comprising a sustainable colour-change test that changes colour in the presence of biological contamination. Working with Professor Cynthia Whitchurch and Dr Laura Nolan, the team are investigating the effectiveness of these tests against a range of microbes.
This project could lead to a simple use test helping to mitigate the risk of outbreaks.
